The Executive Director's Update

Update For Week of May 13, 2022

I love the fact that our MSA students are so well-rounded. We’ve got students singing, playing instruments, and acting this spring. We’ve got students rocking their AP tests. And we’ve got students shining in their Spanish lessons and their spring sports. Many of our students are interested in the governance of their school, too! We have a record number of students running for the two student board seats. As we approach the end of the school year, I hope you will take a moment to recognize the individual greatness of each MSA student. They give me hope for the future!

Update For Week of May 6, 2022

Here's a giant shout out to MSA staff for all they do. We've celebrated them each day this week because they are so deserving. And we are grateful to the PTO and those who donated money for treating the entire staff to lunch on Tuesday! Why do MSA staff show up each day and work so hard? The students! Students have been showing their resilience and brain power this week in many ways. I witnessed the high school speech class giving phenomenal speeches this morning. AP students have been impressively focused on their AP tests. As we wrap up teacher (and staff) appreciation week it is rewarding to see these visible signs of greatness.

Update For Week of April 29, 2022

This week we will celebrate teachers, and really all staff. It's been a hard but rewarding year. Our staff are truly amazing. They give so much of themselves every day to our deserving students.

Update For Week of April 15, 2022

It’s no secret that the effects of the global pandemic continue to be palpable in schools. We have more students who are struggling with anxiety than we did pre-COVID, for example. As school staff and parents find their own way forward to a new normal, we also need to support our children and youth. There are resources available. Here is one that is applicable to all parents and teachers:
Minnesota Educators of the Gifted and Talented (MEGT) is kicking off their new 3rd Thursday Series, Let's Talk About the "A" Word (Anxiety),
April 21, 2022, 4-5:30pm
Participants will leave the conversation with an understanding of:
The differences between stress and anxiety
The signs, symptoms, and different types of anxiety
The impact of social media on anxiety
Renewed energy and approaches to effectively impact their child's anxiety
Specific techniques & language to implement to support their anxious child
This free event is open to anyone. Go to http://mnegt.org to register.

Update For Week of April 8, 2022

I am proud of MSA’s Vision and Mission.
Vision: To be an innovative, sustainable model of academic excellence for all students that creates well-rounded, lifelong learners and global citizens.
Mission: We provide accelerated and inclusive curricula and instruction in all subjects with an emphasis on math and science.
One of the three strategic priorities the board established to help MSA realize these is “success for all students”. Test scores are one way we measure our success. I’m encouraging everyone to do their best on MCA tests next week. The results of these tests serve as important indicators to inform us as to how well we are educating our students.
Last week administrators and two board members participated in a town hall meeting with ten articulate future global citizens. We were beyond impressed with their questions and level of engagement. These kids are fantastic! A Q & A summary will be shared soon. We hope to host another student town hall in early May. Stay tuned.

Update For Week of April 1, 2022

Spring is a busy, joyful time at MSA. As April begins the MSA Administrators are focused on all of the wonderful things that happen in spring, like track & field, prom, and graduation. But we are also fully immersed in planning summer school and making initial plans for next school year. The federal government recognizes how hard the global pandemic has been on students and they have been generous with funding for summer school to help make up for interruptions in learning. MSA is planning a big, bold summer program that will be open to all students. The dates are June 13-July 22 with the 4th of July week off. Summer classes will be designed to be fun, enriching AND help students build needed skills. Students who failed or did poorly in a class or classes will be encouraged to attend. But all MSA students will be welcome. Stay tuned for more information!

Update For Week of March 25, 2022

Dear MSA Community,

I am reaching out to request that you take time to vote for new board members over the next few days. We have an open seat for a parent, a teacher, and a community member. MSA is entering a critical time in its 23 year history as we take our high ranking* - but VERY full - school through expansion. It's essential that we have a knowledgeable board of directors that can lead us through the high level policy and budget issues that will allow us to successfully expand. Voting closes one week from today, Friday, April 1, 5:00 pm. See our website.

It's a great time to be at MSA! We were thrilled to welcome the incoming 6th graders and their families on Tuesday night - their excitement is contagious. And this coming Tuesday we'll welcome the incoming 9th graders. *Niche' has again ranked MSA Best public middle school and second best public high school in Minnesota - also best public high school teachers. This is out of all public schools - not only charter schools.

Update For Week of March 11, 2022

A March 4th article in The Patch about teacher salaries illuminated an embarrassing fact. MSA's teacher salaries are unacceptably low. This needs to change. We have excellent teachers and we are at risk of losing them. The only way we can pay our teachers more is if we have more students. And that means we need more space. On March 22 we will ask the board to approve an expansion plan focused on keeping small class sizes and a small school feel. Expansion will allow MSA to give more students that great MSA education and pay our excellent teachers more. Join me in supporting this initiative and stay tuned for more information soon.

Update For Week of March 4, 2022

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. -Mahatma Gandhi. Parents, please consider running for our board or recruiting a community member to run for our board. Nominations close March 10th. We need strong leaders who understand the role of a board to enable MSA to focus on student learning, expand successfully, and make our vision reality.

Update For Week of February 25, 2022

I am reflecting this week on the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Its true. And its also true that it takes a village to educate a child. Student learning is our goal. Teachers and students and parents are, of course, the primary “villagers.” At MSA we formally recognized school board members and school bus drivers – all important, too. Behind the scenes we have guidance counselors, office staff, administrators, people who keep the cafeteria calm, the paychecks on time, the sidewalks shoveled, the traffic moving, and the toilets flushing. All of this goes on, almost seamlessly, so learning can be the main focus. Our “villagers” were here this week, facing some of the most difficult things a school ever has to deal with, giving 100%, as they always do. It is a fact that some of our students and some of our staff are facing challenges to their health, including mental health. MSA is a caring place and I am grateful for each villager.

Update For Week of February 18, 2022

I am so proud of our MSA teachers and educational assistants. While students enjoyed a Friday off, teachers have been engaged in professional development all day. They've done some bonding; explored ways to further implement our system of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (Dragon FIRE); dug into student achievement data; they've learned more about culturally responsive teaching and the brain; and they've practiced strategies regarding suicide prevention. It was a big day and their dedication to MSA students was really evident as it is each day!

Update For Week of February 4, 2022

Dear MSA Families!

As we move into the second half of the school year I hope to take time weekly to share a little reflective update here. Today I want to take a moment to celebrate our wonderful students! We know the pandemic has been devastating to children; and only time will tell what the long term effects will be. But, our MSA students impress me every day with their hearts and minds. To be clear, they are kind and they are smart!

Almost ALL of our students made the honor roll for the first semester! Four hundred seventy six out of five hundred fifty students made the honor roll in one of our three categories. Two hundred fifty-five of these made the high honor roll (3.450-3.999). One hundred fifty one of these made the distinguished honor roll (4.0 GPA). And seventy made the honor roll (2.950-3.449).
