A Letter From The Board Chair and Director

Parents, Students, and Friends of MSA:

Mark Your Calendar for Thursday, November 15, 2018 - GIVE TO THE MAX DAY!

MSA’s goal is to raise $50,000 on Give to the Max Day to help support endeavors at school that would otherwise not be possible through our general fund.  Our goal is to raise approximately $100 per student, but we encourage each family to consider the value of the education their child receives at MSA and give as they are able. For this year, we would like to improve student technology, purchase additional teaching materials, supply staff impact grants, and upgrade the stage for performing arts and other MSA events.

As you undoubtedly know, MSA is a public charter school which provides an exceptional education to our children while receiving funding similar to, but less than, traditional public schools.  You may not know that, unlike traditional public schools, MSA cannot raise needed funds through any form of tax levy. In order to provide the additional funds needed to support the high quality education our students receive, MSA needs to conduct supplemental fundraisers.  Without additional fundraisers this year, MSA will not be able to make these additional improvements to the school.

To ensure that we can improve and upgrade the technology, purchase teaching materials, supply impact grants, and upgrade the stage, we are participating in Give to the Max Day.  Starting at 12:00 AM on November 15th, and going through the end of the school day on November 19th, you can give through MSA’s website at  Look for the Give to the Max banner on the main page or click on the “Give” tab and scroll down to Give to the Max.  Donations can also be dropped off in the office of any of the three buildings or in the carpool line Thursday the 15th and Friday the 16th.  Credit card donations can also be accepted through a secure connection in carpool lines on the 15th and 16th. MSA is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) non-profit and your donation may be tax deductible.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact MSA Assistant Director Thomas Johnston (, 651-353-2324) or MSA Director, John Gawarecki (, 651-308-2017).  On behalf of MSA, we thank you for considering a contribution to the school and for helping to make MSA one of the best schools in the state of Minnesota.

Academic Excellence

Math and Science Academy has consistently been rated as one of the top schools in Minnesota based on SAT, ACT, and Minnesota standardized tests scores.  In fact, US News and World Report recently rated MSA as the #4 high school in the state of Minnesota in 2018, and MSA has had the top ACT composite average score for the past two years in Minnesota.  To continue the tradition of excellent education at MSA, there is a need to look to our community to enhance the academic experience for our students.  ALL of our MSA families are encouraged to contribute to the AFC campaign on November 15, 2018 - Give to the Max Day. Together, we can ensure that the Math and Science Academy remains the best school in Minnesota.

What about my PTO donation?

Donations made to the MSA PTO help fund important ways to help our students have the best education available in Minnesota.  While the MSA PTO is a separate non-profit organization, donations to the PTO support many in-school events and experiences like Mole Day, Healthy Snack Day, Pi Day, and other experiences that enhance school life for our students.  The Give to the Max Day donations go directly to the school and are used to fund larger projects that typically would be funded by the MSA general fund, but wouldn’t be achieved without additional support from our school community.

In addition...

Please watch your email inbox for updates and incentives on Give to the Max Day.   Regardless of how you give, Give to the Max Day is beneficial to MSA for the following reasons:

  1. 100% of funds donated via cash or check directly to the school remain at the school.  97% of funds donated via MSA’s website stay at the school and on average, over 93% of every dollar you donate via the website goes directly to MSA.

  2. The Give to the Max Day fundraiser does not draw upon large amounts of volunteer resources, leaving more opportunities for our school community to lend their time and talents to activities that will help our school provide outstanding academic or extracurricular activities.

  3. While MSA conducts events that do raise funds for our school, Give to the Max Day is our only true fundraiser for the year.  Your family is asked once to donate and your student is not asked to sell anything door to door. If you do decide to ask your family and friends to give, all you need to do is have them write a check, or direct them to or to our Give to the Max Day website at on November 15.

  4. Many companies match donations made on Give to the Max Day.  Please see the list of companies that match at

  5. Please watch your email and our website for additional information regarding incentives.  The teachers and staff are hard at work and are coming up with some new ideas, stay tuned for more!
