Battle of the Books!

MSA is excited to offer a Battle of the Books program for any interested 6th, 7t,h, and 8th graders. [NEW for 2017-2018: Expanded to include 8th graders!] Battle of the Books is a friendly competition where teams of students read books from a list and then compete in a trivia based competition as a team. Teams will meet during Friday’s study hall in November, December, and January (Battle in early February).

IMPORTANT DATES:

  • Permission slips due: Tuesday, October 17th (return to your English teacher)
  • Volunteer coach’s meeting: Friday, November 3rd (right before Meet Your Team meeting)
  • Meet Your Team: Friday, November 3rd
  • Battle of the Books competition: Friday, February 9th (during advisory/study hall)

PRIZES – ICE CREAM AND PIZZA!

Each student who reads all 8 books will be invited to an ice cream social after the Battle.

The winning teams (1st and 2nd places) for the Battle of the Books competition will win a pizza lunch for the winning team, as well as an award ribbon!

FAQ:

  • How do I sign up?
    Permission forms will be available through your English teacher.
  • Where can I check out a book?
    Books can be checked out in Mrs. Ryan’s classroom (6th grade English). Books are also available at the local public library.
  • How many books can I check out at a time?
    Only one book per student can be checked out at a time due to limited number of copies. 
  • When will a team meet?
    Teams will be meeting sometime during Friday’s study hall (2:20pm-end of day).
  • How big is a team?
    We will form teams based on the number of kids who are participating and how many coaches volunteer. In general, teams are between 4-6 students.
  • Can I request friends?
    Yes, you can request friends on the permission form. We can’t guarantee requests, but we do our best to accommodate requests.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS AS COACHES/MENTORS TO TEAMS: WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We are looking for parent volunteers to help coach and mentor teams for the Battle. Time commitment is minimal (30+ minutes per month). We ask volunteers to meet at least once per month to keep the teams on track. Please consider signing up and supporting this fun event. If interested, you can sign up on your student’s permission form that will be provided at school.
