                                     Science Rules

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.  My name is Mr. Steven L. Pullar;

I am the chemistry, and physics teacher at the Math and Science Academy (MSA).  I completed a

Bachelors of Applied Science degree in Teaching Physical Science at the University of

Minnesota Duluth in May 1998 and completed a Computer and Technology in Education

Certificate in August 1998.  I completed a Masters of Science Education with Physics Emphasis

degree at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls in April 2010.  My Masters project details the

tremendous success Modeling for Physics has been at MSA and compares Modeling to more

traditional curricula.  I am very excited about teaching at MSA.

 This is the second year I have taught University of Minnesota's College in the Schools (CIS) Physics by Inquiry, PSTL 1163.  This is a year long, U of M course, designed for non-science majors. A passing grade (C-) results in four U of M undergraduate credits, and satisfies the "science elective with lab" requierment for all of the U's humanities majors, and it's FREE!

Beginning next year I will also be teaching University of Minnesota's (CIS) Introduction to College Physics, PHYS 1101W.  This is a year longU of M algebra based physics course taught at MSA.  It is designed for science and pre-med majors  A passing grade (C-) will earn four U of M undergraduate credits, and it is also FREE.

Mr. Pullar tries his hand at research in the University of Minnesota’s Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program with Dr. Dan Dahlberg.

Where I Have Been

I graduated high school at Aurora - Hoyt Lakes High School, Aurora, Minnesota in 1976.  Shortly thereafter, I enlisted in the US Army where I enjoyed a very successful career.  I retired from the Army, July 1, 1995 as a Sergeant First Class.  Most of my time in the Army was spent in the Instrument Calibration and Repair field where I gained extensive practical experience using physics and cultivated a deep interest in science in general.  While in Augsburg, Germany I was the Laboratory Chief of a Secondary Reference Calibration Laboratory.  I have spent a total of 12 years in Germany and at one time patrolled the former East/West German border with 3/7th Cavalry as an Armored Crewman. I am married with two daughters, one grandson, three cats, and my big girls; Holly (60 kg, 132 lbs) and Molly (50 kg, 110lbs) our 3 year old Labernards.   I enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities and love to travel.

My General Education Philosophy

Teaching is a service industry. Teachers own a primary duty to the taxpayers of the state of Minnesota. That is to do their very best to prepare young people to be solid, critical thinking, citizens of our country. Teaching is a grave public trust that has tremendous impact on individual lives in the present and far into the future.

My Science Education Philosophy

In our technological society it is imperative that all members of our society have a solid understanding of scientific concepts rooted in a strong ability to solve problems.  This means that science must be experienced hands on, not just facts memorized from a text.  Science must be presented in a way that all students can understand and get excited about.  Historically, women and minority students have received the short end of the stick when it came to physics and chemistry education opportunities.  This has hampered our ability as a nation to compete in the global market place.  Business has found that innovative solutions call for diverse collaborative efforts.  Therefore, extra effort must be made to reach out to these under represented groups.
